Radiator solution

eduroam, govroam and OpenRoaming

Your users connect at any participating site, and visitors connect at yours, with authentication handled by their home organisation. Radiator runs the identity provider and service provider roles for eduroam, govroam and OpenRoaming, with RadSec, realm routing and the operator reporting the federations expect.

Updated 3 November 2026 · Level9 Networks

The problem

Federation participation needs a RADIUS server that handles realm routing, RadSec to the national proxies, and the edge cases of thousands of visiting devices, while meeting the technical requirements of the federation operator.

Target outcome

Reliable roaming for your users everywhere, reliable access for visitors at your sites, and a federation deployment that passes the operator's checks first time.

The outcome

Staff and students open their laptops at another university, a council building or a hospital and are online without doing anything. Visitors to your sites get the same. Your logs show who authenticated where, and the federation operator’s monitoring stays green.

How it works

As an identity provider, Radiator receives authentication requests forwarded from other sites through the federation proxies and authenticates them against your directory. As a service provider, it recognises visiting realms and forwards them, over RadSec, to the national proxy. Realm handling, request filtering and operator-required attributes are configured once and apply everywhere.

What Level9 does

We design and configure the deployment, integrate it with your directory and existing Wi-Fi, complete the federation operator’s technical checks with you and support the service afterwards. For organisations already on an older RADIUS server, we migrate and run in parallel before cut-over.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is Radiator used for eduroam?

Yes. Radiator Software reports that Radiator is used by more than one hundred universities for eduroam and that its engineers have contributed to eduroam for over two decades. It supports the RadSec and realm handling the federation requires at every level.

Can we offer govroam and eduroam on the same infrastructure?

Yes. One Radiator deployment can serve both federations, routing each realm to the correct national proxy with the appropriate policy.

What about OpenRoaming?

Radiator supports the identity provider and access network provider roles for OpenRoaming, with RadSec, Passpoint and DNS-based discovery, so a venue can offer seamless Wi-Fi to users from participating identity providers. Operators can add the SIM Pack for SIM-based identities.
